Multilingual blogging revisited

Earlier I’ve posted about the multilingual efforts for blogging with WordPress. Although the demand is out there not much happened since.

Last month, however, the 0.7 version of a great new plugin was released for multilingual bloggers. It’s called Gengo and you can download it from Jamie Talbot’s website.
Here is its description from the author’s site:

Gengo is a full featured plugin that provides multi-language blogging for WordPress. It allows for an unlimited number of translations and summaries for any post and provides template tags to display language information. It automatically generates semantic information for links and content blocks and is configurable via an options page.

It is a very promising new tool - and it already has its own localized versions, too.

The etiquette of teaching etiquette

You probably saw all the news hype about the little Philippino boy - Luc Cagadoc - who has been disciplined in his school’s cafeteria because allegedly he eats like a pig…

The school board put out a news release saying it’s a disciplinary and etiquette problem, not an (inter)cultural one. And the principal was quoted saying he just wants the students to eat “correctly”…

Not intercultural?

Boy, they can’t be more wrong. You don’t really need a PhD in cultural anthropology or a related field to realize that applying “correct” and “incorrect” labels to the behaviour of a person from a different cultural background is the typical case for ethnocentrism.

Is your site ready for WWW?

Last night as I was cleaning up some old stuff I have found this article written around 2002. It was meant for an ezine but somehow I never published it. Obviously the numbers were referring to the situation four years ago - but the main idea is still valid. More so, since blogs and blogging followed the fate of so many things before: from a simple hobby nowadays they are becoming more and more “business-like” things…

Dumb question… — you might say, my site already is on the world wide web.
I admit that may be true, but let’s take a closer look at these well-known 3 W’s.
